What is circadian lighting?

Circadian lighting systems aim to mimic the natural light patterns of the sun throughout the day. These systems use LED lights that can change in colour temperature and intensity. As the day goes on, the lighting shifts to warmer tones with less blue light to help your body wind down, preparing you for sleep.

How Does It Work in Practice?

Smart home systems like Apple's HomeKit adaptive lighting feature automatically set your lights to gradually brighten with cooler tones in the morning as you wake up, stay bright throughout the day, and then become warmer and dimmer toward the evening, signalling to your body that it's time to relax and prepare for rest.

Hospitals and workplaces are also starting to use circadian lighting to help staff and patients regulate their sleep patterns and improve well-being. This type of lighting has been particularly beneficial in settings where natural light is not abundant, such as in intensive care units or office buildings without many windows.

While circadian lighting is a useful tool to improve well-being, it's important to note that it's just one part of maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm. Regular exercise, limiting exposure to screen time before bed, and having a consistent sleep schedule are also important factors.
